From Student to Shipping Agent: Kristian's Journey at GAC Norway

Can you tell us a bit about yourself? Where are you from, and what did you do before starting in shipping? What is your background?

My name is Kristian, I’m 24 years old, and I’m from Bryne. I’ve spent the past few years studying Business Administration in Bergen. During my studies, I took a few additional courses that introduced me to the world of shipping, and I found it fascinating right away. This interest eventually led me to write my bachelor’s thesis on a shipping-related topic.

What motivated you to join GAC Norway?

My growing interest for shipping made me want to get in to the industry, when I was tipped off about GAC Norway from a friend and I learned more about the companies achievements, values and goals I knew this would be the perfect fit for me.

How have your first seven months as a shipping agent in Stavanger been? Has anything surprised you?

My first seven months as a shipping agent in Stavanger have been great! I’ve learned so much in such a short time, thanks to the support of my amazing colleagues and a great working environment that gives me motivation to do better every day.  Before joining GAC Norway, I had no idea how many rules and regulations there are for ships coming into port. Now, I’m working toward becoming an expert in the field. The opportunity to learn something new every day makes the job really exiting.

What do you find most exciting about the shipping industry?

What I find most exciting about the shipping industry is how truly global it is and how much different parties must rely on each other and cooperate for operations to run smoothly. This, I find both exciting and inspiring.

You’re now part of the dry bulk team. How does it feel to be involved in building a brand-new department, and how do you contribute from Stavanger?

I find it really exciting. I believe that our new dry cargo team, with its diverse backgrounds from different departments across Norway, will make us even better equipped to handle port calls from all along the Norwegian coast.

What’s unique about dry bulk, and what draws you to this specific segment? What makes Dry bulk unique for me is the wide range of cargo and the different challenges that come with handling it. All shipmen’s are different. For me it is exciting to know that we as a team play a big role in keeping the global trade running.

What does a typical workday look like for you as a shipping agent, and how is it different when working with dry cargo?

A typical workday involves a lot of coordination with different parties, including the captain, crew, handlers, suppliers, and harbors. In dry cargo, the focus is much more on what the ship is carrying compared to when I worked in the offshore department. A big part of the coordination revolves around the cargo itself and the loading and unloading process.

Are there any specific moments or experiences in your job that have made a strong impression on you?

I have had many memorable experiences, so i find it hard to pick just one. What stands out the most for me, is learning that if you keep working at something, you’ll almost always find a solution. That’s been one of the biggest lessons from this job, and it’s something I really come to appreciate.

What keeps you motivated in your day-to-day work, and how do you unwind after a long day? The feeling of accomplishment, seeing the company grow and progress, and knowing our customers are satisfied are what keep me motivated every day. To unwind after a long day, I enjoy getting out in nature, whether it’s going for a run or taking a hike, it helps me clear my mind.

What are your goals for the future, both in your current role and in your career?

For now my main goal is to continue building skills and find ways to contribute to the department’s growth and success. In the long term I aim to take on more responsibility, and want to continue growing in the shipping industry and be part of meaningful projects that make an impact.

What’s one thing your colleagues might not know about you?

One thing my colleagues might not know about me is that I’m an adrenaline junkie and have a passion for all kinds of extreme sports. Whether it’s surfing, bungee jumping, skydiving, or any activity that gets the heart racing, I’m always chasing the next thrill.

Do you have any advice for others considering a career in shipping?

My best advice for anyone considering a career in shipping is to stay curious and be willing to learn. It’s a dynamic industry with a lot of opportunities, so definitely go for it. Networking is also a key factor, so remember to maintain good relationships while building new ones.
